Actions that might help fighting climate change

As an Earth science researcher, I talk a lot about climate change. But most of time I was basically sending message stating that climate change is real and bad. I didn't spend much time thinking and explaining what should we do to battle climate change.

Certainly we can slow down our pace in terms of civilization developments, which will slow down climate change maybe. For example, if we slow down the rate population moving from rural area to urban area, it helps because it is likely to decrease emission.

There are many thing we should slow down:

  1. Stop building big cities
  2. Stop building highway
  3. Stop building houses, especially in natural system
  4. Reduce meat consumption
  5. Slow down vehicle production
  6. Reduce ocean exploration
  7. Stop using non renewable energy
All above could fight climate change, to some extent. But that is not enough because it is only slowing the trend down.

Something else we should do to reverse the engine
  1. Plant more trees for sure.
  2. Remove highway and build high speed trains
  3. Remove agriculture land and restore the forest
  4. Protect ecosystem diversity
As an individual, what we can do?
  1. Plant trees around your house
  2. If you have a large house in the forest, maybe you should consider change it to a smaller one
  3. Eat less meat
  4. Take public transportation more and drive less
  5. Do not waste water and electricity
  6. Do not litter
  7. Cook instead of drive through
  8. Buy electronic vehicle
They are also organizations and companies we should put them accountable or require adjustments:
  1. Gas and coal company even though life still depends upon them, but they need to evolve
  2. Company that ignore environmental consequences, such as Microsoft put data center in deep ocean to cool down server
We should also adopt a minimalist lifestyle: we only take what it's needed, nothing more.
The less we take from Earth and the less disturbance, the more sustainable it could be.

Climate change related studies usually involve spatial datasets extraction from a larger domain.
In this article, I will briefly discuss some potential issues and solutions.

In the most common scenario, we need to extract a raster file using a polygon based shapefile. And I will focus as an example.

In a typical desktop application such as ArcMap or ENVI, this is usually done with a tool called clip or extract using mask or ROI.

Before any analysis can be done, it is the best practice to project all datasets into the same projection.

In an attempt to answer this question, as well as redefine the problem I am dealing with, I decided to organize some materials to illustrate our current state on this topic.

Models are essentially equations. In Earth Science, these equations are usually ODE or PDE. So I want to discuss this from a mathematical perspective.

Ideally, we want to solve these ODE/PDE with initial condition (IC) and boundary condition (BC) using various numerical methods.

Watershed Delineation On A Hexagonal Mesh Grid: Part A

One of our recent publications is "Watershed Delineation On A Hexagonal Mesh Grid" published on Environmental Modeling and Software (link).
Here I want to provide some behind the scene details of this study.

First, I'd like to introduce the motivation of this work. Many of us including me have done lots of watershed/catchment hydrology modeling. For example, one of my recent publications is a three-dimensional carbon-water cycle modeling work (link), which uses lots of watershed hydrology algorithms.
In principle, watershed hydrology should be applied to large spatial domain, even global scale. But why no one is doing it?  I will use the popular USDA SWAT model as an example. Why no one is setting up a SWAT model globally?
